Blockages will appear in most households sooner or later - often at the worst possible time. The good news is that most blockages can be prevented with a few simple habits and regular maintenance.
Based on more than 31 years of experience, we've put together 10 ways to significantly reduce the chance of a blockage in any kitchen, bathroom or domestic drainage system.

1. Do not pour grease, oil or food waste down the drain.

More than 60% of blockages are caused by cold-solidifying grease and oil.
The best prevention:

• collect the fat in a separate container
• do not scrape food waste into the sink
• wipe the pan with a paper towel before washing up

Why is it important?
The grease sticks to the pipe wall, thickens layer by layer and then completely blocks the drain.

2. Use a drain filter at all critical points

Simple, cheap, yet highly effective.
The filters catch it:

• hairs
• food waste
• toothpicks, caps, small objects
• pieces of dishwashing sponge

These are all primary clog-forming factors.

3. Clean the siphon regularly (1× per month)

The siphon is where the water is standing, so it's where most of the dirt collects.

Steps:

1. place a bucket under
2. unscrew the lower element
3. clean up the deposit
4. reinstall

This is one of the best ways to preventing early blockages.

4. Don't use too much detergent or fat solvent

The excessive use of chemicals:

• can damage the pipes
• can loosen deposits that later clump together
• may damage the seals of the siphon

„The more the merrier” doesn't work here.

5. Occasionally pour hot water down the kitchen drain

The hot water helps dissolve fresh grease and keeps the pipe walls clean.
This is particularly useful:

• after big cookouts
• baking-oiling day
• at Christmas, Easter

Important: do not pour boiling water on plastic pipe systems!

6. Pay attention to the connection of the dishwasher and washing machine

A faulty connection or a drain pipe that is too long will quickly cause backflow.

Please note the following:

• the pipe must not be broken
• do not drive too high
• be properly ventilated
• the siphon must be in good condition

7. Do not throw wet wipes, intimate waste or cotton wool down the toilet

These are do not decompose, causing a short blockage in the toilet and then in the main sewer section.
Wet wipes are one of the most common household plug-in killers.

8. If you have grease traps, maintain them regularly

In family homes, home grease traps are becoming increasingly common.
Neglecting this can cause fatal sewer clogging.

The grease gun is worth:

• Check every 2-4 weeks
• have it cleaned by a professional if necessary
• connect by sewer washing

9. Get a professional drain cleaning once a year

High pressure waxing removes it:

• greasy, oily deposits
• the waterstone
• sand, mud
• dirt stuck to the walls of the sewer
